Habitat
Goniatites lived in environments with normal-marine salinity. They were more abundant in sediments from epicontinental seas than in the open ocean.
Formation
After a goniatite died, its shell settled to the seafloor and became buried by sediment. Over time, minerals in the groundwater replaced the shell's organic material, preserving its structure.
Deposits
In areas where goniatites were abundant, their shells accumulated to form limestone or shale deposits rich in fossils.
