The Squamish people believed that the stone's black color and shimmering appearance came from being struck by lightning from a thunderbird. Thunderbirds are mythological spirits that are said to create thunder by flapping their wings and send lightning from their beaks. The Garibaldi Belt mountains, where the Squamish people found hypersthene, were considered sacred.
