The dark labradorite belongs to the feldspar group.
The first labradorites came to Europe in the 18th century after they were found in 1770 on the Canadian peninsula of Labrador. The mineral was given its name "Labradorite" in 1832 by the French mineralogist and professor François Bedaunt (1787 - 1850) because of the place where it was found for the very first time. Occasional spellings such as labardorite, labratorite or lapradorite are therefore incorrect.
